In short
A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same sign or the same house of a birth chart, which concentrates a great deal of energy in one style or one area of life. A sign stellium colours the personality with that sign's qualities; a house stellium makes one area of life central. It shows emphasis, not destiny: the theme is strong, and how it is lived is up to you.
What is a stellium in astrology?
A stellium is a cluster of three or more planets in a single sign or a single house of the birth chart, a concentration that makes the qualities of that sign or the affairs of that house unusually prominent in a person’s life. The word is related to the Latin stella, “star”.
There are two kinds, and they read differently. A sign stellium, for example the Sun, Mercury and Venus in Capricorn, gives the personality a strong flavour of that sign: in this case seriousness, ambition and patience. A house stellium, for example the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the tenth house, makes that area of life, here career and public life, a central stage. In many charts both coincide, and the theme is doubly strong.
Some stelliums are very common. Mercury never strays far from the Sun and Venus never very far, so the Sun, Mercury and Venus often share a sign. A stellium is more striking when it includes the Moon, Mars or the chart ruler, or when the planets are tightly grouped by degree.
The effect is focus. A stellium concentrates attention and energy in one style or one field; the rest of the chart may feel quieter by comparison, which is why stellium charts often belong to people with a clear specialism.
The history of the term
Traditional astrology paid close attention to planets gathered together, but its main tool was the conjunction between two planets and the condition of each. The idea of a group of planets acting as one theme belongs mostly to twentieth-century astrology, which read charts as patterns of emphasis: elements, modes, hemispheres and clusters.
Older texts use the word satellitium, from the Latin for an escort or bodyguard, as if the planets formed a retinue around one another; the shorter “stellium” is the usual word today in both popular and technical writing.
In practice, astrologers count three planets as the minimum and give more weight to personal planets than to outer ones. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that a group of two outer planets plus a third can be shared by everyone born in a period of months or years, so a generational stellium tells you more about an era than about a person.
Five checks for a stellium
Name the sign and the house. Write down which sign holds the planets and which house. The sign tells you how the energy behaves, the house tells you where it goes. A Virgo stellium in the sixth house is a doubled message about work, detail and usefulness.
Rank the planets inside. A stellium with the Sun or Moon touches identity or emotional needs; one with Mars adds drive; one with Saturn adds seriousness and staying power. If the chart ruler is part of the group, the stellium describes the main direction of the whole chart.
Find the ruler of the stellium sign. A stellium in Libra depends on where Venus is. If Venus sits in a different part of the chart, it carries the stellium’s energy there, which often shows how the concentrated theme reaches the rest of life.
Look at the opposite house. A heavy house often needs its opposite: a tenth-house stellium needs fourth-house rest, a seventh-house stellium needs first-house independence. Planets or rulers on the opposite side show how that balance is made.
Emphasis, not fate. A stellium is not a fate, and an empty house elsewhere is not a missing life area. It describes where attention gathers.
Because the Larisa app’s Birth Chart lists every planet with its sign and house, a stellium is easy to spot: look for the same sign or house name three or more times.
A stellium in the seventh, tenth or twelfth house
A seventh-house stellium in Libra. The Sun, Venus and Mercury sit together in the house of partnership and in its natural sign. This person thinks, loves and defines themselves in relation to others; they are a natural mediator. The lesson is to know what they want before asking what the other wants.
A tenth-house stellium with the Moon and Saturn. Career and public life are central, and they are emotional as well as practical. This person may feel at home only when they are working towards something visible, and must learn that rest does not erase achievement.
A twelfth-house stellium in Pisces. The Sun, Mercury and Mars sit in the house of the hidden and the sign of dissolving boundaries. Much of this life happens inwardly: imagination, spiritual interest, care for others out of the spotlight. This person needs solitude to recharge and often does their best work alone.
A generational stellium. Uranus, Neptune and Saturn together in one sign, shared by many people born in the same year or two. On its own it says more about a generation’s concerns; it becomes personal only when a personal planet joins it or when it falls on an angle of the chart.
Frequently asked questions
How many planets make a stellium?
Most astrologers count three or more planets in one sign or house; some prefer four, or three that are also close together by degree. The Sun, Moon and personal planets weigh more than outer planets, so a stellium that includes the Sun or Moon is felt most strongly.
What does a stellium in the seventh house mean?
It makes partnership a central theme of life. This person learns a great deal through close relationships, collaborations and one-to-one work, and may define themselves partly through others. The work is to stay oneself inside a partnership, not to avoid it.
Is a stellium good or bad?
Neither. A stellium gives focus, talent and drive in one direction, and it can also make the rest of the chart feel quieter. Its strength is depth; its challenge is balance.
Do outer planets count in a stellium?
They count, but they weigh less. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that a whole generation may share a stellium of outer planets. What makes such a group personal is a personal planet among them or the house they fall in.
