In short
Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied at the moment of your birth, the one most people call their star sign. It describes your core identity, what gives you vitality and the direction you grow towards, while the Moon sign covers emotional needs and the rising sign first impressions. Because the Sun spends about a month in each sign, your birth date alone is almost always enough to find it.
What is a Sun sign?
A Sun sign is the zodiac sign in which the Sun stood at the moment you were born, measured along the ecliptic, the Sun’s yearly path through the twelve signs. It is what most people mean by “my star sign” or “my zodiac sign”, and it is the placement that newspaper and magazine horoscopes are written for.
Within a birth chart, the Sun describes the centre of the personality: what you identify with, what gives you energy and pride, and the kind of life that feels like your own. The Moon sign covers a different layer, emotional needs and instinctive reactions, and the rising sign covers the approach and first impression. A useful shorthand: the Sun is what you are becoming, the Moon what you need, the ascendant how you set out.
The Sun moves about one degree a day and spends roughly thirty days in each sign. In the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, Aries begins at the March equinox, around 20 or 21 March, and the other signs follow in order. That is why a birth date is nearly always enough to find your Sun sign, unlike the Moon or the rising sign.
The Sun rules Leo, is exalted in Aries and corresponds naturally to the fifth house of creativity and self-expression. A Sun in Leo or Aries works in familiar territory; a Sun in Aquarius or Libra, where it is traditionally weaker, shines through a group or a partnership rather than alone.
How the Sun sign became “your sign”
In Hellenistic astrology the Sun was one of the two lights, the leader of a day birth, but no ancient astrologer read a person from the Sun’s sign alone. The ascendant, the Moon and the rulers of the chart carried as much weight. The idea that your sign means your Sun sign is modern.
It spread with popular print. In 1930 the British astrologer R. H. Naylor wrote a newspaper piece on the chart of the newborn Princess Margaret, and the success of that article led to regular horoscope columns. A column cannot know its readers’ birth times, but everyone knows their birthday, so the columns were organised by Sun sign. Within a few decades “What’s your sign?” meant only one thing.
Twentieth-century psychological astrology gave the Sun its present meaning: the conscious self and the path of individuation, the part of us we grow into over a lifetime. That is why the Sun sign is read as a direction you grow into rather than a finished portrait.
Reading your Sun sign beyond the horoscope column
Ask what it feeds on. Every Sun sign has a source of vitality. Aries is fed by a challenge, Taurus by steadiness and pleasure, Gemini by conversation, Cancer by belonging, Leo by creative expression, Virgo by useful work, Libra by harmony with others, Scorpio by depth, Sagittarius by meaning and space, Capricorn by achievement, Aquarius by ideas and friends, Pisces by imagination and compassion. When life starves that source, people feel flat even if everything looks fine.
Find the house. The sign says how you shine; the house says where. A Sun in the tenth house wants to be seen in its work, a Sun in the twelfth shines most in solitude, art or care for others, often unseen.
Check the aspects. A Sun closely tied to Saturn learns confidence slowly and keeps it; a Sun touched by Jupiter expands easily; a Sun next to Neptune carries a dreamy, porous sense of self.
Weigh it against the Moon and rising. The Sun sign does not mean you behave like the textbook description. It means that the theme of that sign is what you are learning to live consciously. A Virgo Sun with Leo Moon and Sagittarius rising may look nothing like a “typical Virgo” at a party, yet still feel most alive when doing something precisely and well.
Don’t use it as a label. A sign describes a direction of growth, not a verdict on character or a ranking of people.
Once you enter your birth date, time and place, the Larisa app’s Birth Chart opens a Sun screen that explains what your Sun describes, next to the Moon and Rising screens.
Sun sign examples in four different charts
A Capricorn Sun in the fifth house. The ambition is real, but it pours into creative or playful work: a designer who runs her studio like a company, or a parent who takes the joy of raising children very seriously. Work and pleasure are not separate for this Sun.
A Gemini Sun conjunct Saturn. The curiosity of Gemini is there, but it speaks carefully. This person may have been called quiet as a child and later becomes a precise writer or teacher. The Sun sign is not missing; it is learning its voice slowly.
Two Scorpio Suns, born on the same day, one in the small hours and one late in the morning. One has Leo rising and comes across as warm and theatrical; the other has Capricorn rising and seems controlled and reserved. Both share the Scorpio need to go deep and the dislike of half-truths, which shows once you know them.
A Pisces Sun right at the edge of Aries. Born late on 20 March, this person checks the chart and finds the Sun at 29° Pisces. The Aries drive people notice belongs to Mars or the ascendant; the core still dissolves into other people’s moods and needs time alone to come back to itself.
In tarot, the Sun card carries the planet itself, and each Sun sign has its own Major Arcana card: Leo’s is Strength, Capricorn’s the Devil.
Larisa's approach
I don’t interpret the Sun only as a sign. I treat it as the centre that shows how a person fulfils themselves, their life energy, their sense of identity and the person they want to become over time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Sun sign the same as the star sign?
Yes. Star sign, zodiac sign and Sun sign all name the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. Astrologers prefer “Sun sign” because the Moon, the rising point and every planet also sit in a sign, and each of those placements tells a different part of the story.
I was born on the cusp. Which sign am I?
One of the two, never both. The Sun enters each sign at a precise moment that shifts by up to a day from year to year, so a chart calculated from your birth date, year, time and place settles it. Born a few hours after the change, you belong to the new sign, even if you share traits with the old one.
Why don't I feel like my Sun sign?
Usually because the Sun is only one voice in the chart. A strong Moon, a rising sign of a very different element or the Sun placed in a hidden house can quiet it. Look at those three first; the Sun sign often shows up more in what you value than in how you come across.
Does the sidereal zodiac change my Sun sign?
In sidereal astrology, used mostly in India, many people's Sun moves back one sign, because that zodiac follows the constellations, which have drifted about 24° against the seasons. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which begins at the March equinox, and the signs on this site follow it.
