In short
Mercury is the planet of the mind in astrology: it describes how you think, learn, speak, write and connect ideas. Where the Sun shows who you are and the Moon what you feel, Mercury shows how you put both into words. Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so your Mercury sign is always your Sun sign or the sign directly before or after it.
Mercury meaning in astrology
Mercury is the planet of thought and communication in astrology: in a birth chart it describes how you take in information, how you reason, how you speak and write, and how you connect one idea or person with another. Its sign shows the style of the mind, its house the subjects it returns to, and its aspects the voice that colours what you say.
Mercury sits close to the Sun in every chart. Seen from Earth, it never moves more than about 28° away from the Sun, so the Mercury sign is always the Sun sign or a neighbouring sign. That closeness has a meaning: Mercury is the messenger of the self, the planet that turns identity into words. A Leo Sun with Mercury in Virgo speaks warmly but precisely; the same Sun with Mercury in Leo speaks like a storyteller.
Mercury moves quickly, usually spending two to three weeks in a sign, and about three times a year it turns retrograde for around three weeks. Mercury retrograde is the best-known planetary period in popular astrology, though every planet except the Sun and Moon has one.
Mercury rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo: the curious, connecting mind and the analysing, ordering mind. It is exalted in Virgo as well, and traditionally weak in Sagittarius and Pisces, where thought moves through big ideas or images rather than detail. Some modern astrologers connect Mercury with the third house of communication and the sixth of work and routines through its signs, Gemini and Virgo. A chart’s actual house rulers come from the signs on its cusps.
Hermes, the scribes and the planet of the mind
The Romans named the swiftest planet after Mercury, their god of messengers, merchants and travellers, whom they identified with the Greek god Hermes. Before them, Babylonian astronomers linked it with Nabu, the god of scribes and writing. All three images meet in astrology: Mercury carries messages, trades, counts, writes and moves between worlds.
In Hellenistic astrology Mercury was the neutral or “common” planet: neither a benefic nor a malefic, it took on the nature of the planets it was with. Depending on the chart it appeared as a morning star or an evening star, and astrologers noted which. Mercury was read for speech, education, writing, calculation, commerce and cleverness, including the cleverness of thieves.
Modern astrology has kept this picture almost intact. Mercury is the mind’s style rather than its quality: not how intelligent you are, but how you learn, notice, decide and explain. Psychological astrology added the idea of Mercury as the inner messenger, the planet of the stories we tell ourselves.
Mercury’s sign, house and aspects
The sign: how you think. Fire Mercury thinks fast and speaks with conviction. Earth Mercury thinks practically and step by step. Air Mercury thinks by connecting and talking. Water Mercury thinks through feeling and memory, and often knows something before it can explain why.
The house: what you think about. Mercury in the second house thinks about value and resources, in the fifth about creative projects and play, in the ninth about beliefs, languages and faraway places, in the twelfth about what is hidden or unsaid.
Its position relative to the Sun. Compare the actual longitudes rather than just the sign names. In Rudhyar’s humanistic model, Mercury behind the Sun in zodiacal order rises before it and represents the forward-looking Promethean phase; Mercury ahead of the Sun sets after it and represents the reflective Epimethean phase. Direct or retrograde motion adds another distinction. A close conjunction brings thought and identity into the same reading.
Its aspects: the tone of the voice. Saturn makes the mind careful, structured and sometimes self-critical; Jupiter makes it broad and persuasive; Neptune makes it poetic and impressionable; Uranus makes it original and quick to jump.
Style, not worth. A “weak” Mercury is not a lack of intelligence, and a retrograde Mercury is not a learning problem. Mercury describes the style of the mind, never its worth.

Four Mercury placements and what they illustrate
A Gemini Sun with Mercury in Taurus. Compare Gemini’s curiosity and range of interests with Mercury’s themes of deliberate thought and tangible evidence in Taurus. Reading a manual or weighing an unfamiliar choice gives that contrast a setting. Ask where gathering possibilities meets the wish to examine one thing thoroughly.
Mercury in Scorpio in the third house. Read enquiry, privacy and the search for underlying motives through everyday conversation, siblings and neighbours. Ask what is spoken directly, which subjects remain private and how the person checks an assumption before pursuing a further question.
Mercury on the same degree as the Sun. With both together in Aquarius, read thinking and self-expression as closely linked themes. The conjunction raises a concrete question: when an idea is challenged, do you experience that as a disagreement about the idea or about you? Consider the actual degree, motion and wider chart before drawing conclusions about the person’s style.
Mercury in Pisces square Saturn. This square sets images, intuition and impression against the demand for structure, precision and proof. A writing or learning task gives the tension a concrete form: how do you organise an impression without losing what made it meaningful? Read the person’s own experience alongside the placement, rather than deriving a school history or profession from it.
In tarot, Mercury is the planet of the Magician, the card of skill and the spoken word, and its signs Gemini and Virgo belong to the Lovers and the Hermit.
Larisa's approach
Mercury is more than a communication style. It tells me how a person makes sense of events, how they process information, what they get stuck on and through which mental filter they see the world.
Frequently asked questions
What does my Mercury sign say about me?
It describes your style of thinking and communicating. Mercury in Taurus thinks slowly and thoroughly and does not change its mind easily; Mercury in Sagittarius thinks in big pictures and may skip details; Mercury in Pisces thinks in images and impressions. The house shows where your mind is most engaged.
Why is Mercury always in or next to my Sun sign?
Because Mercury orbits close to the Sun, it never appears more than about 28° from it in our sky. So your Mercury is in your Sun sign, the sign before it or the sign after it. That keeps Sun and Mercury in close conversation in every chart.
Does Mercury retrograde mean I shouldn't sign anything?
No. Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year for around three weeks, and life does not stop. Astrology reads these weeks as a time for review: rechecking details, finishing old work and returning to conversations. Reading a contract twice is good advice; fearing every signature is not.
What does being born with Mercury retrograde mean?
Natal Mercury retrograde is read through inward reflection, revisiting ideas and reconsidering how they are expressed. Compare those themes with your actual habits: do you revise a thought while speaking, return to earlier notes or prefer time to formulate an answer? The sign, house and aspects give that enquiry its specific context.
