First House

In short

The first house is the birth chart's house of self: your approach to life, presence and personal style. In Placidus it begins at the ascendant degree; in whole-sign houses it covers the entire rising sign. The Sun describes your core identity, while the first house describes how you meet the world and express that identity.

What is the 1st house in astrology?

The first house is the house of self: the sector of the birth chart associated with the ascendant and your approach to life, the presence you bring into a room and the instinctive way you meet anything new. It covers temperament, personal style, outlook and the sense of being someone in particular, separate from everyone else.

In Placidus, the first-house cusp is the ascendant: the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. In whole-sign houses, the first house begins at 0° of the rising sign and contains the ascendant degree. The first is the chart’s symbolic doorway into the world; its opposite, the seventh, describes partnership. The descendant marks the seventh-house cusp in Placidus.

The first house is not the same as your Sun sign. The Sun describes the core of who you are and what gives you energy; the first house describes the way that core comes out. Someone with a Cancer Sun and a first house full of Aries arrives quickly, frankly and a little impatient; the tender Cancer heart is found later.

In the natural zodiac the first house matches Aries, the first sign, and Mars, its ruler. That is why it carries the tone of beginnings: initiative, self-assertion and the urge to act on one’s own behalf. It is one of the four angular houses, so what sits there tends to be noticed.

How the first house got its meaning

Hellenistic astrologers built the whole chart outward from the rising degree, which they called the horoskopos, the “hour-marker”. The place it fell in was the first of the twelve topoi, and some authors called it the helm, because it steered the rest of the chart. It signified life itself, the body, character and the general direction a life would take. Mercury, the planet of mind and speech, was said to rejoice there.

Medieval Latin astrologers kept this view. The first word of their house verse is vita, “life”, and the planet ruling the rising sign, the chart ruler, was treated as the person’s representative throughout the chart. In horary astrology, any question about the person asking was judged first from this house.

Modern psychological astrology turned the first house towards identity: the self-image, the persona and the style of engagement learned early. The older bodily reading survives mostly as an interest in posture, energy and presence, and the first house remains the most personal place in the chart.

Sign, ruler and planets of the 1st house

Find the exact rising degree first. In Placidus, compare the ascendant with the second-house cusp to see which signs the first house covers. A late ascendant leaves room for the next sign, but the house’s width determines how much. In whole-sign houses, the entire rising sign remains the first house, whatever the ascendant degree.

Separate close planets from deep ones. A planet within about five degrees of the ascendant fuses with your first impression. One further down, near the second-house cusp, still belongs to the self but shows more slowly, once people know you.

Read the planets as your manner, not your fate:

  • Sun: a strong, visible sense of self; you want to be recognised for who you are.
  • Moon: feelings show on the face; moods colour every first meeting.
  • Mercury: quick, curious and talkative; you think out loud.
  • Venus: an easy charm; people relax around you.
  • Mars: direct and fast; you act before you plan.
  • Jupiter: open and generous; you take up room.
  • Saturn: reserved and serious early on; you earn trust slowly and keep it.

Track the chart ruler. The planet that rules your rising sign carries the first house into another area. With Libra rising and Venus in the tenth house, your sense of self is tied to work and public life.

Read it against the seventh. The first house describes your own approach; the seventh describes partnership and what you seek in others. A crowded first house emphasises self-direction, while an empty seventh still has a sign and ruler to read. Compare the two for questions about independence and compromise, rather than treating the empty house as a missing skill.

In the Larisa app’s Birth Chart you see the sign on your first-house cusp and the planets inside it. The rising sign there depends on your birth time; leave the time blank and the app works from 12:00 noon, so the rising sign and the first house are approximate.

Same rising sign, different planets in the 1st

Taurus rising with Mars in the first house. Taurus alone arrives calmly and takes its time. Mars there adds heat: a calm surface with a stubborn, determined push underneath. The reading focuses on determined action and resistance to pressure: when does persistence serve the goal, and when does it become stubbornness?

Taurus rising with Neptune in the first house. The same calm, but softer and harder to read. People project onto this person, seeing a friend, a muse or a mystery. Part of the life’s work is to be seen as they actually are.

Taurus rising with an empty first house and Venus in the seventh. With no planets in the first, look to Venus, the ruler of Taurus, in the seventh. This connects self-expression with partnership and shared values. The reading asks how the person stays true to their own preferences while making room for another person.

A planet in the twelfth, a degree above the ascendant. Saturn at 10° Gemini with Gemini rising at 11°: technically in the twelfth house in Placidus, yet it acts like a first-house planet, giving a careful, watchful first impression. Close planets on either side of the ascendant count.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 1st house the same as the rising sign?

They are related but describe different things. Your rising sign contains the ascendant degree on the eastern horizon at birth; the first house is a sector of the chart. Whole-sign houses make that entire sign the first house, while Placidus starts the house at the ascendant degree and extends it to the second-house cusp.

What does an empty 1st house mean?

It does not mean a weak personality. Many charts have no planets in the first house. The rising sign and the planet that rules it then carry the house, and the house of that ruler shows where you most clearly express yourself.

Does a planet in the 1st house describe my looks?

Older astrology linked the first house with the body and appearance. Today it is read more as manner, style and presence: Mars there gives a quick, direct way of moving into a room, Venus an easy charm, Saturn a composed reserve.

Why do planets in the 1st house feel so strong?

The first is an angular house, associated with the ascendant and your way of meeting the world. In Placidus it starts at that degree; in whole-sign houses the degree lies within it. A planet close to the ascendant emphasises its qualities in your manner, particularly at first encounters.
