In short
The seventh house is the house of partnership in a birth chart: the sector of marriage, committed relationships, business partners, contracts and open opponents. It sits opposite the first house of self and begins at the descendant, so it describes the other person you meet face to face. Its sign and planets show what you seek in partners and how you share a life.
What is the 7th house in astrology?
The seventh house is the house of partnership: the sector of the birth chart that describes the people you meet as equals, face to face, from a spouse to a business partner to an open rival. It covers marriage and committed relationships, contracts and agreements, collaborations, clients and the public figures you deal with one to one.
The seventh house begins at the descendant, the point that was setting on the western horizon at your birth. It sits directly opposite the first house, which begins at the ascendant. That geometry is the meaning: the first house is the self stepping forward; the seventh is the other person standing across from it. One cannot be read fully without the other.
Its natural sign is Libra and its natural planet Venus, which gives the house its themes of balance, fairness and harmony. The seventh is one of the four angular houses, so planets placed here act visibly and often arrive through other people: through a partner, a rival or a collaboration that changes the course of a life.
Many modern astrologers add one more layer: the seventh house describes qualities we look for in others because we have not yet claimed them in ourselves. Someone with a reserved first house and Leo on the seventh cusp may be drawn to bold, expressive partners who carry the warmth they hold back.
Where the 7th house comes from: the setting point
In Hellenistic astrology the seventh place was the dysis, the “setting”, where the Sun and planets sank below the western horizon. Its meanings included marriage and partnerships, and, since setting meant the end of the day, old age and the close of life as well. Authors of the period read the spouse, the partner and the opposing party from it.
The medieval Latin verse gives it the word uxor, “wife”. Medieval astrologers widened the house to cover all contracts, lawsuits, thieves and open enemies: anyone who stands against you in plain view. In horary astrology the seventh house signifies “the other person” in any question, including, in some traditions, the astrologer being consulted.
Twentieth-century psychological astrology, influenced by Jung’s idea of projection, read the seventh house as the mirror of the first. It became the place where we meet the parts of ourselves we see more easily in others. The older sense of open enemies remains: the seventh house describes both the partner who completes us and the rival who challenges us.
Who stands opposite: weighing the 7th house
Read the descendant first. The sign on the seventh cusp describes the qualities you are drawn to in partners, and what a relationship needs to feel balanced. Because it is opposite the rising sign, it often names what the rising sign lacks: Aries rising seeks Libran harmony; Virgo rising, a Piscean softness.
Then the planets in the house. Venus here wants a gracious, loving partnership and often finds it. Jupiter brings generous partners and growth through collaboration. Mars makes relationships lively, sometimes combative: you are drawn to strong people and may argue with them. The Moon needs emotional closeness and may look for care from partners. Uranus needs space inside commitment and is drawn to unusual people. Pluto brings intense, transformative bonds.
Find the ruler of the seventh. The planet ruling the descendant’s sign shows where partners enter your life. With Taurus on the seventh cusp and Venus in the tenth, partnership and work are entwined; you may meet partners through your career or work with your spouse.
Weigh the first–seventh balance. Count the planets on each side. A full first and empty seventh points to someone learning to share; a full seventh and empty first, someone learning to stand alone.
Leave out dates and outcomes. A natal planet in the seventh does not set a wedding date, nor does it rule out marriage. It describes a pattern in how you relate. Comparing two charts, called synastry, shows how one person’s planets fall into another’s seventh house.
Directly opposite your rising sign, the Larisa app’s Birth Chart shows which sign sits on your seventh-house cusp. Like every cusp it shifts with the birth time, and when the time is missing the app takes 12:00 noon, which makes that sign an estimate rather than a firm reading.
Examples: the 7th house in ordinary charts
Capricorn rising, Cancer on the descendant, the Moon in the seventh. A person who seems composed and self-sufficient at work, but in close bonds needs warmth, home and family feeling. They may fall for nurturing partners who show the tenderness they keep private.
Mars in the seventh house in Aries. A lively, sometimes stormy partnership life. This person respects strength and directness and is drawn to people who argue back. Their relationships improve when competition becomes teamwork.
Venus in the seventh house in Libra. Venus in its own sign, in its natural house. Partnership comes easily, and this person often acts as the peacemaker in every group. The challenge is not losing their own preferences to keep the peace.
An empty seventh house with Pisces on the cusp and Neptune in the ninth. No planets here, yet partnership is meaningful: this person looks for a spiritual or idealistic bond, sometimes with someone from another country or culture.
In tarot, the Two of Cups mirrors the seventh house: two people meeting as equals and agreeing to share.
Larisa's approach
I don’t see the 7th house only as the house of marriage. I study what kind of person someone draws into their life, what they look for in a partner, which of their own unclaimed qualities they meet in the other person and what relationships teach them.
Frequently asked questions
Does an empty 7th house mean I will never marry?
No. An empty house is simply one without planets, and most charts have several. Partnership is then read through the sign on the descendant and the house of its ruling planet, which shows where and how you tend to meet and build relationships.
Does Saturn in the 7th house mean a late or unhappy marriage?
No. Saturn here describes taking commitment seriously: caution before promising, loyalty after, and often an attraction to older or more established partners. Many people with this placement build their most stable bonds once they know exactly what they want.
Is the 7th house only about romance?
No. It covers every one-to-one agreement: a spouse, a business partner, a client, a lawyer or an open rival. What these share is that the other person stands opposite you as an equal, whether to cooperate or to compete.
What is the difference between the 5th and the 7th house?
The fifth house is romance and attraction, the excitement of being chosen. The seventh is the agreement two people make to share a life or a project. You can have a lively fifth house and a quiet seventh, or the other way round.
