In short
A cusp is a dividing line in the birth chart: the degree where a house begins, or the border between two zodiac signs. House cusps mark the start of each of the twelve houses and depend on the birth time; sign cusps sit at 0° of every sign. Being born on the cusp means the Sun was near a sign border, yet it still stood in one sign only.
What is a cusp in astrology?
A cusp is a dividing line in the birth chart: the exact degree where a house begins, or the border between two neighbouring zodiac signs. The word comes up in two different settings, and it helps to keep them apart.
House cusps. Each of the twelve houses has a starting boundary. In quadrant systems such as Placidus, the ascendant is the first-house cusp and the Midheaven the tenth; the other cusps are calculated between the four angles. Whole-sign houses begin at 0° of each sign. Read the sign on the relevant boundary for the house’s style, then follow its ruling planet to see how its themes connect with the rest of the chart.
Sign cusps. Each sign begins at 0° and extends up to, but does not include, 30°. The boundary between two signs is also called a cusp. People “born on the cusp” were born near the time the Sun crossed one of these boundaries, usually within a day or so of its change of sign.
The two meanings share an image: a threshold. A house cusp is a door into an area of life; a sign cusp is the line where one quality of energy gives way to the next. In both cases a planet close to the line asks for a careful look, because a small change in time can place it on the other side.
There is one important difference. In quadrant systems, house cusps move through zodiacal degrees during the day; whole-sign boundaries shift when a new sign rises. Both require the birth time to place the houses. Sign boundaries themselves remain fixed in the zodiac; the date and hour of the Sun’s crossing change from year to year.
House boundaries and the meaning of Latin cuspis
The word comes from the Latin cuspis, “point” or “spear tip”. Astrologers writing in Latin, and later in English, used it for the pointed starting line of a house, and from there the term spread to the border between signs.
House cusps work differently across systems. In whole-sign houses, each house begins at 0° of a sign, so house boundaries and sign boundaries coincide. Quadrant systems such as Porphyry, Regiomontanus and Placidus calculate the cusps from the chart’s angles; a house can begin at 17° of one sign and the next at 9° of another. Traditional reading also includes rules for planets approaching a cusp, including the practice of reading a planet shortly before the boundary as influencing the following house.
“Born on the cusp” is a much newer expression. It became common with twentieth-century Sun-sign columns, which give date ranges for each sign. Because those dates are approximate, readers born near a border were left uncertain, and the idea of blended cusp personalities followed.
When a planet sits on the line
First, check the birth time. Recalculate the chart with the earliest and latest plausible times if the recorded time was rounded. A planet close to a cusp needs that comparison, because the amount a cusp moves varies with the place, time and house system. Note whether the planet stays in one house or crosses the boundary.
Then decide on a margin and keep it. Many astrologers move a planet into the next house when it is within about five degrees of that cusp; others use two or three degrees, or none at all. The choice matters less than consistency.
Read the cusp sign of each house. It describes the style of that area of life, even when the house is empty. Leo on the seventh-house cusp asks for warmth and admiration in partnership; Capricorn on the second asks for slow, solid security.
Follow the cusp ruler. Locate the planet ruling the sign on a cusp and connect the two houses’ topics. With Virgo on the tenth cusp and Mercury in the third, examine career and public responsibility alongside communication, learning and everyday contact.
For a Sun near a sign border, calculate, don’t guess. The Sun sign comes from the exact position on the birth date. A person with the Sun at 0° Scorpio is Scorpio; at 29° Libra, Libra. Neighbouring-sign flavour comes from other placements, not from the Sun sharing two signs.
The Larisa app’s Birth Chart works out the position of every house cusp and planet to the degree from your birth details. It also shows which sign your Sun falls in, which settles any cusp question for a known date, time and place. With no birth time entered it takes 12:00 noon, and the house cusps it shows are then approximate.
Borderline cases, sign and house
Sun at 29° Pisces. Born less than a day before the Sun entered Aries. This person is Pisces, though they may relate to Aries descriptions. If Mercury and Venus are already in Aries and the ascendant is a fire sign, the sense of being “half Aries” has a clear source in the chart.
Sun at 0° Sagittarius. The Sun has crossed from Scorpio into Sagittarius and is at the beginning of the new sign. Read it as Sagittarius, rather than combining two Sun signs. Any Scorpio themes in this chart come from other placements; compare those placements separately instead of treating proximity to the boundary as a second Sun sign.
Venus two degrees before the seventh-house cusp. In a Placidus chart Venus is technically in the sixth house, close to the descendant. A reader using a near-cusp allowance examines both daily work and partnership: practical care, cooperation and what makes a shared routine pleasant. Check the exact degree and the allowance you use before deciding how to describe the house placement.
Saturn exactly on the fourth-house cusp in Placidus. Saturn on the IC brings responsibility, seriousness and structure into the reading of home and roots. If a corrected birth time places it just inside the third or fourth house, compare both house placements while keeping the closeness of its contact with the IC in view.
Frequently asked questions
If I was born on the cusp, which sign am I?
You are one sign. At any moment the Sun stands at one exact degree of one sign, and the day it changes sign shifts by a few hours from year to year. Calculate your Sun sign with your birth date, time and place; the result will be one sign, perhaps at its very first or last degree.
Are cusp signs like Taurus–Gemini a real thing?
Popular astrology describes cusp blends, but the Sun occupies one zodiac sign at a time. A Sun at 29° Taurus is Taurus. The rest of the chart explains other sign themes: Mercury or Venus in Gemini, Gemini rising or several placements in Gemini. Read those placements separately rather than combining them into a second Sun sign.
What does a planet near a house cusp mean?
A planet a few degrees before the next cusp is often read as already working in the next house, especially if the birth time is not exact. Many astrologers use a margin of about five degrees for this, others a smaller one. A planet right on a cusp gives that house a strong, clear voice.
Why do house cusps change with birth time?
Quadrant house cusps are calculated from the horizon and meridian at your birth time and place. Their movement through zodiacal degrees varies with latitude and the house system, so even a small time correction matters near a cusp. Whole-sign houses instead begin at sign boundaries and change when the rising sign changes.
