In short
Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus occupied at your birth, and it describes how you love, what you find beautiful and what you value. Where the Moon shows what you need to feel safe, Venus shows what you are drawn to and how you show affection. Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, so it always sits in your Sun sign or within two signs of it.
What does the Venus sign mean in astrology?
A Venus sign is the zodiac sign in which the planet Venus stood when you were born, and in a birth chart it describes your style of love, your sense of beauty and the things you value enough to keep. It answers questions such as: what charms me, how do I show affection, what do I need in order to feel appreciated, and what will I spend time and money on with pleasure.
Venus is often confused with the Moon. The Moon describes emotional needs and what makes you feel safe; Venus describes attraction and enjoyment, the part of you that reaches out towards someone or something because it pleases you. It is also distinct from Mars, which describes desire as action. Venus is the invitation, Mars the approach.
Seen from Earth, Venus is never more than about 47° away from the Sun, so it always falls in your Sun sign or within two signs of it. It usually spends four to five weeks in a sign; in a year with a retrograde, it can stay in one sign for about four months, which is why many people born in the same season share a Venus sign.
Venus rules Taurus and Libra, the earthy, sensual side of pleasure and the airy, relational side of harmony. It is exalted in Pisces, where love becomes devotion, and traditionally weak in Aries, Scorpio and Virgo, signs where it has to love through action, intensity or careful service. None of these is a poor love life; each is a different language.
Aphrodite, the morning star and the lesser benefic
The planet carries the name of the Roman goddess of love, whom the Greeks called Aphrodite. Before them the Babylonians linked the same bright planet with Ishtar, goddess of love and war. Because Venus appears either before sunrise or after sunset, the Greeks first thought they were seeing two different stars, the morning star Phosphoros and the evening star Hesperos.
Ancient and medieval astrologers counted Venus as the lesser benefic, the planet that brings pleasure, harmony, ornaments, music and marriage. Its condition in a chart was read for love, for the arts and for a person’s comforts. Medieval texts also gave it women, young people and friendship.
Later astrologers kept those themes and turned them inward. The Venus sign became the language of how a person loves and what they value: self-worth, taste and the kind of relationship in which they feel appreciated. In synastry it is one of the first placements compared between two people.
Finding your love language in your Venus sign
Start with what it finds beautiful. The sign shows the taste of your affection:
- Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): love that is open, playful and direct; attraction to courage and enthusiasm.
- Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): love shown through care, loyalty and practical help; attraction to reliability and quality.
- Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): love that needs conversation and room; attraction to wit, fairness and originality.
- Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): love that is protective, deep or devoted; attraction to emotional honesty.
Then find the house. The house shows where pleasure and affection gather. Venus in the second house finds joy in good things and earned comfort; in the sixth, in daily rituals and work done well; in the eleventh, in friendships and shared causes.
Check its partners. Venus close to Saturn loves loyally and with caution; Venus with Uranus needs freedom inside closeness; Venus with Neptune idealises, and has to learn to see the person as well as the dream.
Compare it with Mars. Venus represents what attracts you; Mars represents how you pursue it. A shared element gives the two a similar symbolic language, but the actual aspect shows how they relate in the chart. Read a tense contact through conflicting desires or approaches, then compare that interpretation with your experience.
Not a verdict. Venus describes how you love, not whether you will be loved, and no sign is better or worse at it.
The Larisa app’s Birth Chart shows Venus by sign, house and aspect from your birth details. Without a birth time it uses 12:00 noon, so the house is approximate; the Venus sign remains uncertain if Venus changed signs that day.
Five Venus placements in everyday life
Venus in Capricorn. This example emphasises affection expressed through reliability and practical effort: helping with a move, keeping an agreement or taking a commitment seriously. Time and respect are central themes. Read those themes alongside the house and aspects, rather than treating Capricorn as proof that affection lasts.
Venus in Gemini with a Taurus Sun. The Sun wants steadiness, but Venus is drawn to quick minds and good conversation. Read their contrast through the appeal of wit, humour and variety alongside the need for consistency, with the house and aspects adding detail.
Venus in Scorpio in the seventh house. Love is all or nothing, and partnership is where life becomes intense. Trust is the central theme: once given, it runs deep; once broken, it is hard to win back.
Venus in Aries conjunct Saturn. The Aries impulse to make the first move meets Saturn’s caution and concern with consequences. Read the conjunction through the tension between direct attraction and restraint. A concrete question is what commitment means here, and whether caution supports that aim or prevents expression.
Venus in Libra in the sixth house. Affection is shown in daily life: a well-arranged desk, remembering how a colleague takes their coffee, dividing shared work fairly. A disharmonious workplace can wear this person down more than a romantic disappointment.
In tarot, Venus is the planet of the Empress, the card of abundance, beauty and care, and Taurus and Libra, the two signs it rules, belong to the Hierophant and Justice.
Larisa's approach
I don’t look at Venus only as the planet of love and beauty. I try to understand how a person loves, how they want to be loved, what they value in a relationship and what they need in order to feel valued.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Venus sign so close to my Sun sign?
Because Venus orbits inside Earth's orbit, it never appears far from the Sun in our sky: at most about 47°. That is why a Venus sign is always the Sun sign, one of the two signs before it or one of the two after it. A Gemini Sun can have Venus from Aries to Leo, never in Scorpio.
Does my Venus sign show who I will fall in love with?
No. It describes your own way of loving and what attracts you, not the sign or the identity of a future partner. People are often drawn to someone whose chart echoes their Venus, but that is a theme to notice, not a name on a list.
What is the difference between the Venus sign and the Mars sign?
Venus describes what you are drawn to and how you receive and give affection; Mars describes how you go after what you want, including desire and drive. Read together they show both sides of attraction: what pleases you and how you act on it.
What does it mean to be born with Venus retrograde?
It describes values and affection that turn inward first. People with natal Venus retrograde often take longer to know what they like and dislike, and they tend to revisit old loves, styles or friendships. It is not a sign of unhappiness in love.
