The Knight of Wands upright: fire at a gallop

The Knight of Wands is the card of drive and passion. Picture a knight galloping towards you on horseback with a burning wand in his hand: he does not know how to stop, he acts more than he thinks, and he is led by excitement rather than fear. Upright, the card tells you to take action, to make a bold move and to be open to adventure or change.

As one of the court cards, he can describe a person, a personality trait or a way of approaching a situation. Knights are the most mobile rank of their suit, the ones who carry what the Page has learned out into the world and have set off towards a goal.

The Knight of Wands is the restless, forward-leaping face of the fire element. Unlike the King’s mature, governing fire, his fire does not burn in a hearth yet but in the wind: fast, bright and a little out of control. That is why this card is one of the most enthusiastic court cards, and one of the most hasty. In the Rider–Waite–Smith deck the knight sits on a rearing horse, and his tunic is patterned with salamanders, the legendary lizards once believed to live in fire.

The Knight of Wands is the card of a move, a sudden journey, throwing yourself into a new job, or finally taking a step you have put off for a long time. The card asks you to be brave. But a knight is truly strong when he knows where he is going, so keep your horse’s reins in your hands. Stopping now and then to check where your passion is taking you costs you nothing in speed; it only makes sure you arrive in the right place.

The Knight of Wands reversed: when the reins slip

The reversed Knight of Wands shows energy moving fast but in the wrong direction. The fire is there, but instead of lighting the road it scorches everything around it:

Direction How it looks
Haste Decisions made without thinking, leaps without a plan
Anger Impatience turning into a quick burst of temper
Unfinished work Starting everything fast and finishing nothing
Delay A planned trip or move being postponed

With the reversed Knight the trouble is not the energy itself but its timing and direction. Beside the Tower or the Five of Swords, the consequences of a hasty move grow heavier, and it is time to stop and think. Beside Temperance or the King of Wands, the card asks you to let the energy mature and to learn patience. Beside the Hanged Man, the reversed Knight says a process cannot be forced to go faster.

The Knight of Wands in love

In love, the Knight of Wands describes a passionate, exciting attraction. A flirtation that develops fast, a sudden romance, being swept off your feet at first sight: this is the card’s territory. The energy is high, and there is a strong spark between two people.

For a single reader, the Knight of Wands highlights adventure, confidence and attraction that develops quickly. Notice how you respond to that excitement and what pace you want for a new connection. Enjoy a shared activity, express your interest clearly and discuss expectations before assuming that enthusiasm means commitment.

If you are in a relationship, it brings new fire, adventure and a journey together. It adds life to a bond that has grown bored with routine; a spontaneous weekend away or a new pastime started together is just what this card loves.

Reversed, it shows impatience, sudden decisions or a reluctance to commit in a relationship. Its patterns include inconsistent attention and arguments sparked by impatience: the excitement of a connection has not been matched by steady communication or shared expectations. The card reminds you that trust needs building alongside excitement. Turning up on time for a date you promised says more than any grand gesture.

The Knight of Wands in career and work

At work, the Knight of Wands describes throwing yourself into a new project, a bold career change or an entrepreneurial energy. The card is strong in sales, sport, travel, media and work that needs quick decisions. Seizing an opening at once, bringing energy to a team and taking risks are its language.

Before you lose your enthusiasm, turn your idea into an action plan with three steps and a date for each. Speed is good, but speed without direction brings nothing but tiredness.

Reversed, it shows hasty decisions making work harder, projects left half done, or the urge to quit a job in a moment of anger. Sleep on any important decision before you make it. Listening to a calmer voice on your team adds a compass to your enthusiasm; the Knight does his best work with people who help set the direction.

The Knight of Wands and money

With money, the Knight of Wands describes energy on the move: a new business opening, spending on a trip, income that follows a bold career step. The card supports enterprise and risk-taking, but it wants the risk to be calculated.

Its shadow is thoughtless spending and snap decisions. A large purchase for the sake of a passing enthusiasm, or rushing to put money into something for fear of missing out, is the Knight’s reversed face.

Reversed, it shows scattered spending, a budget running out of control, or the consequences of an unplanned money decision. When you are asked to make a quick financial decision, leave it until the end of the week; the Knight’s speed only works with a route map.

The Knight of Wands, mood and inner balance

The Knight of Wands reflects an excited, restless mood and the urge to move or change something. Upright, its energy seeks an outlet: a task, an adventure or a creative effort. Notice where enthusiasm is useful and where impatience is making it hard to stay with one thing.

Move that energy into your body: running, dancing, cycling, a brisk walk. Fire needs to move, and when it does, the mind settles too.

Reversed, the fire inside you has turned into anger or restlessness. In that state, take a deep breath and give yourself some time before you say something or make a decision. Try to steer the fire rather than put it out. Finishing a task you left half done is also a good way to gather this energy.

Which way does the Knight of Wands lean in a yes or no question?

The upright Knight of Wands leans towards yes, especially in questions about taking action, a journey or a bold step. The card says “now”.

Reversed, it leans towards “not this way”: the wish is right, but not at this speed or in this manner. Before you take the step, ask: “What am I skipping over?”

Advice from the Knight of Wands

The Knight of Wands advises you to be brave. Openings don’t wait; if you truly believe in something, act on it.

But don’t let go of the reins. However fast your horse, you decide the direction. Tie your excitement to a goal, know the risks you are taking, and don’t decide in anger. Not jumping to the next thing before you finish the one you started is this card’s hardest and most valuable lesson.

To see a relationship from both sides, use the Relationship spread in the Larisa app. If the Knight of Wands appears in the “Your unconscious influence” position, look at the wish that is speeding you up without your knowing: perhaps what is in a hurry is not the relationship, but the impatience inside you.

Symbols of the Knight of Wands in the Larisa deck

Out of the centre of the card, a black horse gallops towards us. On it rides a knight with long curly hair, in dark armour worked with gold. A red cloak billows behind him in the wind. His gaze is turned to the right, into the distance, and his face shows determination and excitement.

At the end of the wand he raises in his right hand, a real flame is burning. The wand is a twisted branch, and the fire at its tip shines like a torch. The knight’s fire is in his hand, but where he carries it depends on the horse’s speed. Gold emblems like compass stars sit on the chest and shoulders of his armour, a reminder that even this fast traveller carries a sign of direction.

The horse is black and powerful, its mane flying in the wind. There are gold star emblems on its forehead and chest, and red and gold ornaments on its harness. Dust and sparks fly up from under its hooves. The black horse is the power inside the Knight and the speed that needs reining in; the sparks show that he leaves a mark wherever he passes.

In the background are red and orange clouds, a rocky desert and jagged mountains, with the Milky Way stretching across the sky. The whole landscape is painted in the colours of fire: the Knight is riding through fire and carrying fire with him.

The salamander-patterned tunic of the Rider–Waite–Smith image is absent here. The fire has stepped out of the pattern on his clothes and spread across the whole scene, so that the rider, the horse and the sky seem to share a single flame.

Larisa's approach

“What is the person really feeling?” is one of the questions I ask in a reading. Tarot is fundamentally a way of reading the subconscious for me. I try to understand suppressed feelings, fears, desires and inner processes a person sometimes has not recognised. The Knight of Wands is approached through its classic meanings and symbolism, with mythological and astrological connections, intuition and experience. I am interested in why the situation is happening and what dynamic is working beneath what can be seen. My aim is to make that inner story visible rather than declare a fixed fate.
