Sextile (Aspect)

In short

The sextile links two planets 60° apart, a sixth of the zodiac or two signs from each other. It links signs of compatible elements, fire with air or earth with water, so the two forces cooperate readily once they are put to work. Astrologers call it the aspect of opportunity: the door is open, but you have to walk through it.

Sextile meaning in astrology

Sixty degrees, one sixth of the circle, separate two planets in sextile. They usually sit two signs apart, and the orb is tighter than for the other major aspects, often about 4 to 6°. It is a soft aspect, like the trine, but its support works differently. A trine joins planets in the same element; a sextile joins neighbouring, compatible elements, fire with air and earth with water.

Air feeds fire, water nourishes earth. That is the logic of the sextile: two different forces that help each other once they are brought together. Because they are different, though, the help is not automatic. The sextile marks a talent or a contact that waits for you to use it.

The sextile pairs:

  • Fire with air: Aries–Gemini, Aries–Aquarius, Leo–Gemini, Leo–Libra, Sagittarius–Libra, Sagittarius–Aquarius. Ideas give action a direction, action gives ideas a body.
  • Earth with water: Taurus–Cancer, Taurus–Pisces, Virgo–Cancer, Virgo–Scorpio, Capricorn–Scorpio, Capricorn–Pisces. Feeling gives practical life meaning, practical sense gives feeling a home.

Consider a person with Mars in Leo sextile Mercury in Libra: drive and diplomacy work well together, which makes them persuasive. But the gift shows only when they speak up.

The sky offers an image of it every month. About five days after the new moon, the crescent stands roughly 60° from the Sun: still thin, clearly growing, easy to miss if you are not looking west after sunset. That is the sextile’s character, a beginning that rewards attention.

How the sextile got its name

The name comes from the Latin sextilis, “of the sixth”, because 60° is one sixth of the circle; the Roman month Sextilis, the sixth of the old calendar, carried the same word before it was renamed August. Greek astrologers called the aspect the hexagonon, after the six-sided figure that six sextiles draw inside the zodiac.

Ptolemy included the sextile among the classical aspects and read it as harmonious but weaker than the trine; in degrees it is exactly half a trine. Medieval astrologers grouped it with the trine as an aspect of friendship, a friendship of goodwill rather than of full alliance.

Modern astrology gave the sextile a clearer character of its own. It became the aspect of opportunity, of skills that grow through practice and of contacts that open doors when someone knocks. Where the trine describes what you already have, the sextile describes what you can easily develop.

How a sextile works in a chart

Read it as an invitation. Phrase the sextile as a possibility: “Venus sextile Saturn: affection can become lasting commitment when I give it time.” The aspect shows what becomes available with a little effort.

Find the activity that switches it on. A sextile between Mercury and Mars comes alive in debate, writing or sport; between the Moon and Venus in hosting, caring and making a home beautiful. Ask where the person already does this, or could.

Check the houses for the setting. Sextiles usually link houses two apart, such as the first and third or the fifth and seventh. Those fields of life support each other: self-expression and communication, romance and partnership.

Notice how it softens a hard aspect. A planet sextile to one end of a square often shows the practical way through the tension.

Treat it as a skill to practise. Sextiles respond to repetition: a language learned word by word, an instrument, a network built contact by contact. The more often the two planets are used together, the more natural their cooperation becomes.

Don’t expect it to act alone. An unused sextile can pass almost unnoticed, which is why people sometimes discover theirs late.

Sextile examples

Moon in Pisces sextile Saturn in Capricorn. Sensitivity meets structure. This person can take a vague feeling and turn it into a plan, which makes them good at supporting others through difficult times. The gift grows when they treat their own feelings with the same care.

Venus in Cancer sextile Mars in Virgo. Affection is shown through useful acts: cooking, fixing, showing up. The pairing is gentle and steady; it comes alive when the person dares to make the first move instead of waiting to be noticed.

Jupiter in Aries sextile the Sun in Gemini. Ideas and confidence encourage each other; opportunities often come through talking, teaching or travel. The sextile asks this person to follow up on the contacts that conversation brings.

Sun in Scorpio sextile Saturn in Virgo. Intensity meets method. This person can stay with a difficult task, a research question or a long recovery of trust, far longer than most. The sextile turns depth into a craft, provided they accept help instead of carrying everything alone.

An out-of-sign sextile. Mercury at 28° Leo and Saturn at 1° Scorpio stand 63° apart, so the degrees make a sextile, while the signs themselves are three apart. Many astrologers still read the contact as an opportunity, but fire and water blend less easily than fire and air, so the step it asks for is a bigger one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sextile weaker than a trine?

Quieter rather than weaker. A sextile usually gets a smaller orb, around 4–6°, and its support does not arrive on its own as a trine's does. Yet because it asks for a conscious step, many people use their sextiles more actively than their trines.

Which signs are sextile to each other?

Signs two apart. Each fire sign is sextile to two air signs (Aries to Gemini and Aquarius) and each earth sign to two water signs (Taurus to Cancer and Pisces). Sextile signs share a polarity: both active, or both receptive.

Can the Sun and Venus form a sextile?

No. Seen from the Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47° from the Sun, and Mercury never more than about 28°, so neither can reach the 60° of a sextile with the Sun. Between those two pairs, the only major aspect possible is the conjunction.

What does a sextile mean in synastry?

Ease that grows with use. When one person's planet sextiles another's, the two find it simple to cooperate, talk and help each other, though the bond deepens only through shared activity. Couples and friends with several sextiles often describe each other as easy company.
