In short
An opposition is the aspect formed when two planets lie at or near 180° apart in zodiacal longitude. It describes a polarity: two needs that pull in different directions, such as autonomy and closeness or rest and ambition. Read both planets and their actual houses to locate the tension; projection describes experiencing one side chiefly through other people.
What does an opposition mean in astrology?
An opposition is an aspect in which two planets lie at or near 180° apart in zodiacal longitude. The permitted distance from exactness is called the orb; an allowance of about 8° is common for a natal opposition, with the working limit chosen for the planets being read. At exact opposition their longitudes mark opposite ends of a diameter across the chart; within an orb, that alignment is approximate. A conjunction fuses two planets; an opposition holds them face to face.
The six opposite sign pairs share a modality and pair fire with air or earth with water. An aspect near a sign boundary also needs its actual degrees checked, since planets within an opposition’s orb can fall outside these pairs:
| Axis | What the two ends ask for |
|---|---|
| Aries – Libra | self and the other |
| Taurus – Scorpio | what is mine and what is shared |
| Gemini – Sagittarius | facts and meaning |
| Cancer – Capricorn | home and public life |
| Leo – Aquarius | personal pride and the group |
| Virgo – Pisces | order and surrender |
The best image is a seesaw. Lean too hard on one end and the other rises sharply; find the middle and the two ends carry each other. Every full moon is an opposition too, with the Moon lit up exactly across from the Sun.
Two oppositions are built into every chart. The ascendant always faces the descendant, and the midheaven always faces the IC. A planet sitting on one end of these axes therefore opposes the other point automatically: the Sun on the descendant, for instance, means the ascendant lies across from the Sun, and the person’s identity is often discovered through partnership.
Where the opposition comes from
The word comes from the Latin oppositio, “a placing against”. In Ptolemy’s geometry the opposition is the simplest division of the circle, a straight line through the centre, and in Greek it was named after the diameter. Traditional astrologers counted it among the difficult aspects and linked it with conflict, open enemies and the seventh house, which lies opposite the first.
Astronomy gives the aspect another image. A planet orbiting beyond Earth reaches opposition when it lies opposite the Sun in our sky. This occurs during its apparent retrograde loop, and the planet is visible for much of the night. Closest approach occurs near opposition, but not necessarily on the same date.
Psychological astrology of the twentieth century kept the conflict but changed its reading. It explored the opposition through projection: identifying with one planet while experiencing the other through partners, rivals or parents. Interpretation then asks how both qualities appear in the person’s behaviour, and how each is acknowledged, resisted or assigned to someone else.
Reading an opposition in a birth chart
Locate both planets by degree and house. Opposite house pairs include the first and seventh (self and partner), fourth and tenth (home and career), and second and eighth (personal and shared resources). An opposition close to a cusp can place the planets in a different pair of houses because the aspect allows an orb. Read their actual placements rather than assigning houses from the aspect alone.
Ask which end you live and which you meet. Usually one planet feels like “me” and the other like something that happens to you through other people. With Venus opposite Saturn, you may feel loving and keep meeting cold partners, or feel serious and keep meeting light ones.
Look for a planet in the middle. A third planet square to both ends turns the opposition into a T-square and becomes the outlet; a planet sextile and trine to the two ends offers an easier bridge.
Count them. One opposition is a theme. Three or four, often across different axes, describe a life shaped by relationship and negotiation; when the planets gather on two facing sides of the wheel, astrologers speak of a see-saw chart.
Do not read it as a breakup. An opposition between your Sun and someone else’s Moon in synastry contrasts one person’s expression of identity with the other’s emotional needs. Read how those differences appear in the relationship: where self-expression meets a need for comfort, and where their ways of relating diverge.
Balance is the verb. Oppositions are rarely solved by choosing one side. They ask for rhythm: some weeks for work, some for home; some decisions for yourself, some shared.
Opposition examples, from full moon to edge case
Sun in Leo opposite Moon in Aquarius. Born under a full moon, this person wants to shine personally (Leo) and to belong to a group of equals (Aquarius). They can swing between needing applause and distrusting it. Their best path is to be a warm individual inside a shared cause.
Mars in the first house opposite Venus in the seventh. Drive belongs to the self, charm to the partner. Such a person may lead strongly and feel drawn to gentle, graceful partners, then complain that they never take the lead. The example asks where they allow their own gentleness and where they expect a partner to carry it for them. Compare initiative, receptiveness and the need for space in their actual interactions.
Moon in Cancer in the fourth opposite Saturn in Capricorn in the tenth. Home and career pull hard against each other. The person may feel guilty at work for not being home and guilty at home for not working. The opposition does not say one must lose; it asks for clear boundaries between two loyalties.
Venus in Taurus opposite Pluto in Scorpio. Calm pleasure meets an all-or-nothing intensity. This person loves loyally and deeply, and may swing between wanting a simple, peaceful bond and being drawn to consuming ones. The axis asks them to let love be both steady and deep, without a fight for control.
An opposition lived as a single trait. Mercury in Gemini in the third house opposite Jupiter in Sagittarius in the ninth. The person may feel no pull at all: they collect facts and then build a big picture from them, often in one breath. This example uses the opposition as a bridge between detail and the bigger picture. Ask how the person tests a theory against facts and gives individual facts a wider context. For this person, the question is how to use both habits within the same task.
Larisa's approach
With an opposition I look at what the tension produces and how the person uses it. I never count hard aspects as plainly “bad”; they usually point to the areas where someone is challenged most and, at the same time, where their greatest growth is possible.
Frequently asked questions
Does an opposition mean conflict?
An opposition describes tension between contrasting needs. Conflict is one expression of it; negotiation and cooperation are others. Read both planets, their houses and the question to see what is pulling against what. A theme of mediation belongs in the interpretation when the situation involves making room for two competing positions.
Which signs are opposite each other?
Six pairs: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. Each pair shares a modality and joins fire with air or earth with water, so the two ends are different but able to complete each other.
What does projection mean with an opposition?
Living one end of the axis yourself and seeing the other end mainly in other people. With the Sun opposite Mars, a reading can examine how you express identity, anger and initiative. Compare what you recognise in your own behaviour with the qualities you assign to others, including how disagreements are actually handled.
What is the difference between an opposition and a square?
The square is friction between two forces that block each other and push you to act. The opposition is a pull between two ends that can see each other clearly, and it pushes you to balance. Squares are often worked out by doing; oppositions by relating.
