In short
The fourth house is the birth chart's house of home, family and roots: your private life and emotional foundations. In Placidus it begins at the IC, the point opposite the Midheaven; whole-sign houses count the fourth sign from the rising sign instead. Its sign, ruler and planets describe your relationship with home, belonging and security.
What is the 4th house in astrology?
The fourth house is the house of home, family and roots: the sector of the birth chart that describes where you come from, what makes you feel safe and the private life behind your public one. It covers the family you grew up in and the one you build, your childhood home and the home you make now, your ancestors and the emotional ground you stand on.
In Placidus, the fourth house begins at the IC, short for Imum Coeli, Latin for “the lowest part of the sky”. The IC is the point where the zodiac’s path crosses the local meridian below the horizon, directly opposite the Midheaven (MC); it is an angle on that path, not the point directly beneath your feet. The MC describes public direction and the IC its private roots. In whole-sign houses the IC can fall outside the fourth house.
Each house has a natural sign and planet. The fourth corresponds to Cancer, the fourth sign, and to its ruler, the Moon. That pairing explains the house’s tone: memory, care, belonging and the need for a place where you do not have to perform.
The fourth is one of the four angular houses, with the first, seventh and tenth. In quadrant systems, these houses begin at the chart’s four angles; in whole-sign houses the angles sit within signs. Angular placements emphasise themes that stand out in a life.
Where the meaning of the fourth house comes from
In Hellenistic astrology the place beneath the Earth was called the hypogeion, “the subterranean”. Astrologers read it as the foundation of a life and, by extension, everything underground: land, buildings, buried things, ancestors and graves. The same place was linked with the parents, above all the father, with the family line and property, and with the last part of life and the way matters end. In medieval horary astrology the fourth house is still called “the end of the matter”, the place where a question comes to rest.
Twentieth-century psychological astrology kept the roots and gave them an inner meaning. The fourth house became the emotional foundation: the atmosphere of childhood, what we absorbed at home without words and the private self we return to when the day is over. Which parent belongs to it is still discussed: traditional texts give it to the father, while many modern astrologers give it to the nurturing parent.
Both readings meet in one image: the fourth house is the root system of the chart. It is not what others see, but everything visible grows from it.
How to read the 4th house in your birth chart
The sign on the fourth-house cusp. It describes the climate of home and how you create security. In Placidus, this is the sign on the IC. A few examples:
- Cancer cusp: a close, protective family atmosphere; home is the heart of life.
- Capricorn cusp: early responsibility, a home built on duty; security earned through effort.
- Aries cusp: a lively, outspoken household; you need freedom of movement even at home.
- Libra cusp: a home where harmony and beauty matter, sometimes at the cost of saying what hurts.
- Sagittarius cusp: roots that travel; home is where you feel free, not one fixed address.
Planets in the fourth house. The Moon here emphasises feelings, family bonds and memory, linking the house’s private foundations with emotional needs. Saturn brings a sense of duty towards family and a slow, careful building of security. Venus wants a beautiful, peaceful home. Mars brings energy and sometimes friction under one roof. Jupiter opens the doors to a large household or a generous sense of home. Uranus describes moves, change or an unconventional family; Neptune an idealised or blurred picture of home; Pluto deep transformations that pass through the family line.
The ruler of the fourth house. Find the planet that rules the sign on your fourth-house cusp, which is the IC in Placidus, and see where it stands. It shows where your idea of home is lived: in the tenth house, home and career are tied together; in the seventh, a partner becomes home; in the ninth, roots stretch across borders.
The IC–MC axis. Read the fourth house with the tenth. Roots and public direction pull against each other and support each other, and many life decisions about work and family are about balancing that line.
The Larisa app’s Birth Chart draws your houses with the Placidus system from your birth date, time and place. House cusps move with every few minutes of birth time, so when the time is unknown the app takes noon, 12:00, and the fourth-house cusp and the IC come out approximate.
Fourth house examples from real chart patterns
Moon in Cancer in the fourth house. The Moon is in its own sign, Cancer, with fourth-house themes of family, memory and a private home base. Family and memory carry great weight: this person keeps old photos, cooks the family recipes and feels unsettled without a home base. The lesson is to let home be a source of strength rather than a place to hide.
Saturn in the fourth with a Capricorn IC. Someone who took on responsibility early, perhaps looking after siblings or carrying the family’s worries. Home was serious, and security had to be built by hand. Read the placement as a question about security and responsibility: which family duties still matter, and how do you make room for warmth alongside them?
Uranus in the fourth house. Childhood with several moves, an unconventional family or a home life that changed suddenly. The reading asks how freedom and belonging coexist at home, and whether familiar family expectations fit the person’s own needs and idea of a household.
The fourth house ruler in the tenth. A Gemini IC with Mercury in the tenth house: family and career run into each other. This might be a family business, work from home or a profession that carries a parent’s influence. Separating the two is part of the life’s work.
In tarot, the same themes appear in the Ten of Pentacles, the card of family, inheritance and the home that holds generations, and in the Chariot, the Golden Dawn card of Cancer.
Larisa's approach
I read the fourth house as the foundation of a person's life that stays hidden from others. I use it to understand emotional patterns inherited from the family, childhood experiences and the sense of belonging, as well as who someone really is when they are away from other people.
Frequently asked questions
What does an empty 4th house mean?
It does not mean an empty home life: an empty house has no planets in it. Read the sign on the fourth-house cusp and locate its ruling planet to explore home and family through another area of life. In Placidus the cusp is the IC; in whole-sign houses it is the beginning of the fourth sign from the rising sign.
Does the 4th house represent the mother or the father?
Traditional astrology gives the fourth house to the father and the tenth to the mother; many modern astrologers give the fourth to the parent who nurtured you and the tenth to the one who represented the outside world. In practice, read the fourth house as the parent or family atmosphere that shaped your sense of safety.
Is the 4th house the same as the IC?
Not quite. The IC is a single point, the lowest angle of the chart, directly opposite the Midheaven. In quadrant house systems such as Placidus it marks where the fourth house begins, so the two are closely linked, but the house is a whole sector while the IC is its doorway.
Does a planet in my 4th house mean I will move or buy a home?
No. A natal planet in the fourth house describes your relationship with home and family, not a future event. Jupiter there may describe a love of space and a full household; Uranus, a restless or unconventional idea of home.
