Dream meanings

Dreaming of Spiders

In short

Dreaming of spiders points to something being woven: a plan you are building patiently, or a web of relationships pulling you in. Watching a spider spin its web reflects your own careful work; getting caught in one shows a situation where you feel controlled. Traditional Turkish dream books read a spider as a weak but cunning enemy, and clearing its web as relief from trouble.

What does it mean to dream about spiders?

A spider in a dream means something woven thread by thread: a plan you are building patiently, a network of relationships, or a system that slowly draws you in. The spider is one of nature’s most patient craftsmen. It spins its web from thread made in its own body and knows how to wait. That gives the symbol two faces: creativity and skilled effort on one side, the trap and the urge to control on the other.

Spider dreams often come with a feeling of stickiness. When you cannot easily free yourself from a relationship, a debt, a habit or a thought that keeps going round in your head, the mind draws it as a web. The key to the dream is where you stand in that web. Did you watch the spider from a distance, get caught in its threads, or sweep the whole web away with your own hand?

Spider webs, spider bites and other common spider dreams

Spider webs

A spider web describes a system already in place, or a situation you find hard to get out of. A web in a corner of your home points to a matter you have not touched in a long time, one that has gathered dust. A web glittering with dew is a beautiful structure built with patience, and shows your effort beginning to pay off. A spider waiting at the centre of its web means you are waiting patiently for a result.

Clearing away a spider web

Sweeping a web away or tearing it with your hand shows you have decided to free yourself from something that has been holding you back. If it came away easily, that step is simpler than you think. If the threads kept sticking to your fingers, leaving a relationship or a habit takes patience, and the dream asks you not to give up on letting go.

A spider bite

A spider biting you means a situation you were drawn into without noticing has now reached you directly. A bite on the hand concerns something you are doing; a bite on the neck concerns words you said or could not say. If the bite swelled up, a hurt you thought was small has grown inside you. If you only found the mark later, you tend to notice what is happening after the fact.

Killing a spider

Killing a spider shows you ending something that was controlling or draining you. You faced a fear, cut off a dependency, or walked away from a relationship that wore you out. If you felt relieved afterwards, the decision was right; if you felt guilty, the bond you broke also held something that belonged to you.

A black spider

A black spider describes a worry you struggle to name, or a plan being kept secret. A black spider in a dark corner says a matter you have been ignoring is quietly growing. If it came toward you, the time to face that matter is near. Killing the black spider means you are finally putting a long-held suspicion behind you.

A giant spider

A huge spider stands for a situation or a person that seems bigger than you: a dominant family elder, a controlling figure at work, or the part of you that wants to keep everything under control. The bigger the spider, the heavier its hold on you. If you stood your ground in front of it, you are not as small as you feared.

A spider crawling on you

A spider walking over your body describes a thought you cannot shake, or a closeness that pushes against your boundaries. A spider climbing up your arm shows you feel someone is getting too involved in your life. If you shook it off, you are ready to set that limit.

Spiders in your bed

A spider in your bed describes unrest creeping into your private space, your rest or your closest relationship. It may be unspoken tension with a partner, or work worries you carry all the way to bed. If you lifted the spider out and set it outside, you know how to win your peace back.

Spiders everywhere

Spiders appearing from every direction speak not of one problem but of a web of small, connected worries. It is the dream of a crowded season where one task starts before the last is done and everything is tangled together. If the spiders scattered and disappeared, the knot is starting to loosen, and pulling the first thread may be enough.

The emotional and psychological meaning of spider dreams

In psychological readings the spider is closely tied to themes of control and attachment. The dream spider can stand for a relationship, a family system or a structure of control you built yourself. Sometimes you are the weaver: the plans you spin to keep everything in its place end up holding you as well. If the spider stands for a real person, the dream passes no judgement on them; it shows how free you feel around them.

Your feeling changes what the web means. Fear points to a situation where you feel trapped. Fascination or curiosity describes a creative power, a wish to build something patiently. Disgust says you need a clean boundary in a relationship or a setting. If you simply watched the spider calmly, you have the patience to untangle something complicated.

A small exercise helps. When you wake, write down three things in your life that feel sticky right now, then mark which of them you wove with your own hands.

Spiders in folklore, myth and dream tradition

Traditional Turkish dream books read the spider as a weak but cunning enemy: little strength, but a skilfully set trap. Its web is read as a snare or as weak, untrustworthy ties, and clearing away cobwebs as being freed from worries and trouble. Some readings link a spider spinning its web with success won through patience. Even so, a spider dream does not announce that anyone is setting a trap for you.

Western dream books were kinder still. Gustavus Hindman Miller’s 1901 dream dictionary read a spider as a sign that you would be careful and energetic in your work and well rewarded, and a spider building its web as happiness and security at home. Myth gives the spider its craft: in the Greek story Arachne challenged the goddess Athena at the loom and was turned into a spider, weaving forever. In West African tales Anansi is a clever spider who outwits the strong. British folk belief holds that a tiny “money spider” landing on you brings luck. Turkish calls a closed, outdated mind “cobweb-headed” (örümcek kafalı).

Tarot cards linked to spider dreams

The Devil is the tarot’s spider web. In the Rider–Waite–Smith deck two figures are chained to a pedestal by loops around their necks, loose enough that they could lift them off if they chose. Larisa reads this card as dependencies, obsessions, unhealthy bonds, control and the shadow side of ourselves. Next to a dream of being caught in a web, the Devil reminds you that the bond holding you is not as tight as it seems.

The Eight of Swords fits the helplessness inside the web. A woman, blindfolded and loosely bound, stands among eight swords planted in the ground around her, yet the way ahead is open. The card says the web in your mind is stronger than the one outside. If you struggled to get free in the dream, it reminds you that the first step is loosening the blindfold.

To look more closely at the fear behind the dream, open the Shadow Work spread in the Larisa app; among its five cards, the positions for the repressed emotion and the source of the shadow help you see who has been weaving the web.

Larisa's approach

When I read a dream I look at a person's relationship patterns and at the inner processes they may not yet be aware of themselves. In a spider dream I first ask whose web it is: are you the one weaving it, or are you standing in someone else's? The dynamic working on the unseen side is the real subject of the dream.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to dream about spiders?

No, a spider dream is not bad in itself, however creepy the animal looks. A spider calmly spinning its web speaks of patience, effort and creativity. A spider biting you or crawling over your skin points to a relationship that is closing in on you, or a worry that keeps circling in your head.

What is the spiritual meaning of a spider in a dream?

In spiritual readings the spider is the weaver of fate and the patient creator: it spins its whole world out of its own body. A spider in a dream is read as a call to notice what you are weaving with your choices and to take responsibility for the pattern you are creating.

What does a white spider mean in a dream?

A white spider is a softened version of a frightening symbol. It describes a gentler plan, a well-meant effort or a tangle that is starting to come undone. If a white spider passed by without harming you, the matter on your mind is lighter than you feared.

What does it mean to dream of spiders and snakes together?

Spiders and snakes in one dream show two kinds of unease stacked on top of each other: the spider is a web or system wrapped around you, the snake the live energy of an issue you keep putting off. Notice which one was closer to you; that is the matter to deal with first.

Why do I keep dreaming about spiders?

A recurring spider dream means a situation you cannot get out of is still on your mind. Next time, track one thing only: the size of the spider. If it shrinks from dream to dream, the knot is loosening; if it grows, the situation is gaining ground, and the dream asks you to name the single thread that keeps it tied to you.
